About Us

Founded in 1899, Calvary Hospital is the nation’s only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital devoted to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients without regard to race, religion, or economic status.

Calvary’s primary mission is to provide palliative care – the active treatment of pain and other symptoms caused by cancer. The staff is dedicated to helping patients and their loved ones celebrate life and treasure every moment. They embrace care of the dying as one of the highest expressions of the healing arts and sciences.

Each patient is assigned a primary physician, registered nurse, social worker and dietitian, and the services of pastoral care, therapeutic recreation, radiology, laboratory and other services are also available. All care is guided by the core values of compassion, respect for the dignity of every patient, and non-abandonment of patients and families.

Inpatients are cared for at a 200-bed facility in the Bronx and a 25-bed satellite unit at Brooklyn’s Lutheran Medical Center. The satellite has become a pioneering national model for the delivery of palliative care services within primary acute care hospitals.

The continuum of care includes: inpatient care; outpatient care for those receiving active treatment; the Center for Palliative Wound Care, for outpatient treatment of complex wounds; Calvary@Home, encompassing home care, hospice, and nursing home hospice for people with cancer and other illnesses; the Family Care and Cancer Prevention Center; and extensive bereavement support programs for children, teens, and adults. The bereavement program includes Camp Courageous, a bereavement camp held each summer for children and teens who have attended a support group during the year. In 2004, Calvary launched a $50 million campaign, entitled “Where Life Continues: The Campaign for Calvary Hospital.”

Volunteer

Calvary Hospital Volunteers are special people who devote their time, talents and energy in many different ways, and contribute to the continued success of Calvary's mission of caring for advanced cancer patients. Many volunteers work closely with patients, taking care of those details that distinguish Calvary from other hospitals -- those details that make patients as comfortable as possible.

Volunteer opportunities are available at Calvary seven days a week. Those interested in volunteering should contact the volunteer office at 718-518-2120 on weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm to arrange a meeting with the director. New volunteers are given a three hour orientation.
