About Us

Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center is unique among New York City healthcare facilities. As a traditional nursing home, the Center provides a haven for elderly residents in need of long-term care. As a specialty hospital, it cares for disabled children as well as adults. In addition, people with chronic illnesses – including AIDS, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, and kidney failure – call the Center home.

Located directly across from Central Park’s renowned Conservatory Garden on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, the Center was established in 1978 in the former Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital and New York Medical College buildings. The Center is named in memory of New York’s beloved Archbishop whose vision continues as the organization’s guiding light.

Beginning with the care of 250 profoundly disabled children entrusted to the Center’s custody following the Willowbrook tragedy, the Center today provides a home for 50 infants, children, and young adults living with severe disabilities. Soon after its opening, the Center expanded its mission to respond to the needs of the frail elderly – and now provides residential care to more than 500 individuals.

During the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s, the Center became the first skilled nursing facility in New York to dedicate a special unit for the long-term care of people living with AIDS, and the program has since expanded to its current 156-bed size. And in 1988, through the support and encouragement of John Cardinal O’Connor, the Center dedicated the first special unit in New York City for the care of those suffering with Huntington’s Chorea. This 48-bed unit is now a regional center of excellence that provides opportunities for research to treat this tragic disease.

The Center also offers several outpatient services and partners with other organizations to address distinct community needs. The Center’s Developmental Disabilities Clinic serves children and adults through specialized outpatient medical, dental, and psychological care, while its Dialysis Clinic provides life-sustaining hemodialysis treatments to residents of the Center and members of the surrounding community who suffer from kidney disease. The Center also sponsors St. Theresa’s Residence, a home for adults who live with severe mental retardation.

Keeping in mind the ever-changing and complex healthcare challenges of the New York community, the distinct requirements of its residents, and the need to provide a modern facility, Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center is looking to the future and preparing for the next 30 years and beyond. The Center’s leaders have brought together a team of architects, engineers and industry leaders to plan a new home that will better serve its residents.

With a firm commitment to continue its mission in the best possible setting, and with the best trained and most dedicated staff of professionals, the Center is on its way to securing the highest quality of life and standards of care for all it serves.
